Are you considering do-it-yourself garage installation? If you are good at following instructions and are handy putting together a lot of parts, you may wish to install a new garage door yourself. You should keep in mind, however, that installing a garage door can be dangerous and may cause you injury.
The type of garage door you are installing is an important consideration. A swing hung door opens to the side just a like a regular door. These types of doors are not very common. ‘Up and over’ doors open by swinging outward into the driveway and then up, resting parallel to the garage door ceiling. Roller or sectional doors are made up of several individual sections that are connected and held together by hinges. These types of doors open vertically on tracks.
Most people choose to have a professional install the door; however, if you do choose to do the installation yourself, a sectional door is the best type of garage door to have.
Unless your new garage doing is going to be installed on a new house, you must first remove your existing door. If you are not familiar with the door’s inner workings, this can be a very dangerous task. An important consideration is the spring system on the old door. Spring mechanisms can have a great deal of tension that can cause injury when you are adjusting or installing them. Check to ensure that the door you are removing has a torsion spring system. Do not cut the cables or disassemble the spring, especially on a closed garage door. Spring tension is the highest on a closed door. Ensure that the spring tension has been released before the door is removed.
After you remove your old door, inspect the wood that surrounds the doorframe and ensure that no rotted wood exists. You must have fresh new wood to hold the brackets and springs for your new garage door.
It is important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions when you install the new door. It is also important to use the manufacturer-supplied hardware. Do not become frustrated or overwhelmed with the number of steps and parts.
There are four key points to keep in mind when doing your own garage installation. First, make sure that the door and the bottom of the tracks are level ‘ especially on the first section of the door. The bottom brackets should be securely fasted to the door. The overhead track must be in perfect alignment and securely supported. Finally, ensure that the springs have the correct tension.
