A bonsai forest is a style of bonsai whereby a little forest made up of tiny trees is made inside of a bonsai pot or tray. This is usually considered to be one of the bigger bonsai creations that can be made by a bonsai gardener. A bonsai forest commonly features trees which grow tall and straight with little or no curving to ruin the forest like appearance of the plants.
Bonsai forests might look casual, yet there is generally a lot of thought that has gone into the layout of the trees. There might be any number of trees in the bonsai forest, from three to seven, or more if desired. The entire group is divided into smaller groups and the spacing between them is intentionally irregular. An arrangement of five bonsai trees that compose a bonsai forest can actually be two distinct arrangements of two and three trees. Groupings are completely up to the preferences of the gardener.
In most bonsai forests, the trees are all of the same species. A mixture of different tree species is seldom created by gardeners. Trees may be scattered throughout the entire pot for a large forest look or on top of a rock or hill. Another design is to have clumps of trees in certain areas. Rocks and moss may be included with the landscape to reproduce a forest appearance.
When creating a bonsai forest, it is a good idea to place the trees so they don’t block one another when viewed from the front. The symmetry of the crowns and foliage of the bonsai forest will depend completely on your preferences. Some bonsai gardeners prefer rounded crowns while others want tapering ends. It will also depend on what species of tree you’re growing.
Making a bonsai forest is generally time consuming and challenging work, particularly in the beginning. The reason for this is that the roots will require anchoring in a single location to be able to create the forest appearance and to control them. Eventually, the tree roots will mesh together and you will have an entire bonsai forest to prune and preserve.
Even though none of these ideas are essential, by following them it should enhance the random appearance of the forest and make it seem more lifelike.
The cultivation of the bonsai tree has been an Asian tradition for centuries, and is now enjoying popularity in western society as well. It’s important to learn how to properly care for your indoor bonsai in order to see it flourish.
