With spring just being a few months away it is time to start thinking about those home-improvement projects you wish to finish. Spring is the perfect time to begin home improvement projects. The weather is normally hotter than the winter months but not quite as hot as the summer. The following is a guide to the top five home-improvement projects to complete this spring. Grab some paper and a pen and begin planning your projects now, before spring time is not consistent and your still left with those half finished projects. Make sure you interview several tile contractor before starting your job.
Paint Your Walls – One of the most simple do-it-yourself projects for spring is to put a new coat of paint on your walls. You can paint just one room or your entire house. It is incredible what a new coat of paint can do to make your house look actually pretty. I just spent New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day painting my apartment. I only have 4 rooms, so it took me just the two days but my apartment now looks beautiful. From a new dramatic color ( deep red, bright green anyone? ) to a simple ivory or light grey, painting your house’s interior walls will really give your home a boost. All you need is two paint brushes, a paint roller and a paint tray, some masking tape and paint ( a gallon of paint will do one coat on a typical size room ). The final cost for me was $22, but I’m living in Thailand. The medium cost in the US for all of the supplies will run around $25 for a gallon of inexpensive paint, plus another $20 for paint brushes / rollers etc . I like Sherwin-Williams interior paints as they’re great quality and are simple to scrub with a damp cloth. Home Depot has tons of paints though, and the Home Depot website has great info on which paints are the best.
A free renovation project for spring is to wash out all your closets. Go closet by closet and sort through all your things. Make 3 piles, ‘Keeping’, ‘Giving Away’ and ‘Throwing Away’ and put each item in one of these Piles. Then, put all your ‘Keeping’ things back in your cupboards and closets, but this time stack them neatly. If you don’t mind spending a little bit of money, you can buy storage containers for as little as $4 that will make your closets and cupboards look even neater. Over the New Year, I arranged all my closets. I will now find everything because it’s all in its’ place and, with only six storage containers that cost me less than $15, my closets and cupboards now look wonderful. The Container Store has great products for storage at particularly reasonable costs.
Cleaning exterior and interior windows. Spring is that feared time of year when many of us think about cleaning our interior and exterior windows. This task is again something that may be done by yourself without spending cash to hire a professional. All you need is some windex and paper towels or an old time solution of white vinegar and water and some crumpled up newspaper and you are prepared to get started. The exterior portion of your windows can be simplest cleaned using a window cleaning attachment that goes a pressure washer. This saves you from taking all the windows down and attempting to clean them by hand. Ensure you employ a ladder to reach those higher windows. The expenses to scrub windows is usually very cheap. For a bit less than about $8.00 you can purchase a spray bottle of windex or your favorite glass cleaner, and a roll or 2 of paper towels. The white vinegar and paper option is even cheaper, just use an old newspaper you have at home, and a bottle of white vinegar is normally less than $2.
One thing I spotted with my residence was, over time, the covers or plates on my light switches were looking grubby. Some of them also had paint on from previous renovation projects. So, this New Year, I made up my mind to replace all of the light switch plates with other ones. You can purchase light switch plates for as inexpensive as $2 for the plain plastic ones or as costly as $30 and up for designer switch plates with lovely footage or for hand painted ceramic ones. I bought some of the plain cheap ones and a few hand painted ceramic ones and, boy, does my residence look nice! New Backsplash in Your Kitchen – A really fun spring do-it-yourself project can be to add a bright backsplash to your kitchen. All that you need are some ceramic tiles, a tube of grout, some tile adhesive, a tape measure, a nicked trowel and a tile cutter. Also remember the rubber gloves, unless you need your hands to be full of grout. For instructions on how to lay grout and tiles, you can’t get better than Lowe’s web site. Lowe’s has some excellent how-to do-it-yourself articles that tell you step-by-step how to do many home improvement projects.
